A union of seven states, the U.A.E. Has it all mountains, beaches, deserts, oasis, camel racing, along with a true shop-until-you-drop paradise in Bedouin markets or the by now legendary duty free shopping of Dubai. Well-heeled travelers say that if you only visit one country in the Gulf, make it the U.A.E.
The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras AlKhimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Qowain, together covering an area roughly the size of Portugal. The capital the country is Abu Dhabi whose surface area represents about 85 per cent of the total.
In the U.A.E.. the best of the modern world melds with the wonderful age-old traditions of Arabian hospitality making the country a popular destination before tourism was a household word in the rest of the gulf states. While both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are renowned abroad for the sophistication of a contemporary lifestyle, Sharjah is noted tor its quiet, laid-back ambience and its endless bazaarw. Ajman and Umm AlQuwain retain the characteristics of their age-old tole of being fishing villages. Laying between sea and mountains, Ras Al Khaimah is in the north of the country while Fujairah. On the east coast, is asleepy emirate, perfect for a getaway.
