The principality of Monaco, all 4,500 citizens and 1.95 square kilometers of it has been ruled almost without interruption by the Grimaldi family for 700 years. Perched comfortably between the Alps and the Mediterranean and bordered by the French and the Italian Rivieras, this miniature country is best known for its royal family, its annual Grand Prix, its immense wealth and its spectacularly ornate casino. Luxury yachts float serenely in its harbours, high-rise apartments (with equally high-rise prices) stand loftily on its hills and every day, at precisely 1155 hours, the ceremony of the changing of the guards takes place outside the Royal Palace.
Monaco consists of four principal areas: Monaco Ville - also known as Rocher de Monaco - perched on top of a 60-metre high rock; Monte Carlo, famed for the Grand Prix and casino; La Condamine, around the port; and Fontveille.
The country abounds with smart little bistros, elegant restaurants and stylish boutiques. Yet despite its undeniable sophistication, parts of Monaco, particularly its picturesque market and casual cafes, still retain the atmosphere of a small Mediterranean town.
All Holidays' selected hotels in Monaco can be reached in about 40 minutes by road from Nice Cote d'Azur Airport. Alternatively, you may wish to take a seven - minute helicopter ride, offering superb views of the coast and city. There is also a train linking Monaco to Nice and other points on the Riviera, a journey worth taking for the scenery alone.
