Cannes' magnificent Boulevard de la Croisette - shaded by palms and pines, lined
with the city's smartest hotels and bordered by a wide, sandy beach is one of the
finest promenades on the entire Riviera. Away from La Croisette and the equally
smart Rue d'Antibes are the loss hurried streets of the original town. Where the air is
filled with the scents of perfumes distilleries and the tempting aroma of Provencal
cooking. And in the summer down by the old port -once a fishing harbour but now
almost exclusively devoted to pleasure craft - the restaurants and bistros spill out onto
the pavements in appealing array. Nearby are several golf courses, many with
spectacular views of the mountains and sea.
Cannes is perhaps best known for its many festivals and cultural activities, including
the international film festivals when , in May, directors, producers, actors and
journalist converge on the city for two weeks of non-stop films and, occasionally,
outrageous publicity stunts. But the fun doesn't stop there - people come to Cannes
all year round, attracted by its lovely, surroundings, lively bars,
excellent restaurants, busy night-life and glamorous casinos.
