The Hill country of central Sri Lanka includes some of the loveliest landscapes in Asia. Here, in the island's lofty green heartland you'll find waterfalls, vast tea estates and invigorating air, ancient temples and superb botanical gardens, swift-flowing rivers and sacred mountains.
Kandy, the easy-going up- country capital that was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings, is in a lake-side setting, surrounded by hills. Locked away in its mountain fastness, Kandy managed to avoid Portugese and Dutch intervention ansd hence its unique culture has been preserved almost in its original form- exemplified by the Kandy Esala Perahera, an elaborate 10-day festival held during July or August when a replica of the sacred tooth of the Buddha is borne through the streets in one of the world's most spectacular festivals.
