Central plain to tower 200 metres above a carpet of jungle dates back at least two and a half millennia and contains some amazingly well-preserved wall paintings .At Anuradhapura the 2,200 years old Sri Maha Bodhi tree is said to have grown from a branch of the very tree under which Buddha found englightenment .At kndy where the old kings held sawy for 300 years after the arrival of Europeans is the temple of the tooth,from which during the kandy perahera one of the most spectacular festival in the world -the relice is paraded through the steets on the back of a richely caparisond elephant.At Nuwara Eliya an English explorer
 recreacted for him self a tradinational English village in a high mountain valley amongst some of the island most beautiful scenery.And in many rural areas elephants still haul timber from tahe forest and water buffalo plough th fields.
When visiting temples or other places of worship modest fress should be worn -idelly with sandals since these are easier to remove than laced shoes.
