Founded in 1890 by Cecil Rhodes, Harare has developed into an attractive city whose wide boulevards - nostalgically named "Kensington" and "Belgravia" - are lined with flowering trees, leafy parks, fine colonial uildings, modern high- rises and interesting shops. One of the most relaxed and welcoming cities in Africa, it is a culuurally active, cosmopolitan place with a good choice of restaurants, theatres, cinemas and nightclubs. Thers is a strong tradition of music and local bands, often combining African and western themes, may by heard in the city's bars and clubs, shopping , especially for arts and crafts, particularly the lovely Shona sculptures, is a delight, with a daily average of seven-and-a-half hours sunshine and day time temperatures that rarely drop below 12C or exceed 21C- although on winter nights it can be cold enough for frost - Harare's climate encourages outdoor activities and the residents anjoy a wide range of local sporting events, from hores-racing and torotting to soccer
and rugby.
