 Zimbabwe, sitting on a high plateau between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers in south central Africa, may be a young nation but it's an old country. Here, amidst some of the most magnificent landscapes in southern Africa, is a culture that dates back over 1.500 years. The handsome modern buildings of Harare, Zimbabwe's colourful capital, merely echo the architecture of much earlier time when the 10-metre high granite walls of Great Zimbabwe first rose above the veld. The ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe, now designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site,k was once a city of 10.000 people and the capital of a realm that stretched across modern Zimbabwe and tnto Botswana, Mozambique and South Africa.
For many visitors the country's leasing attraction is, of course, Victoria Falls - but Zimbabwe has even more to offer, across the savannah, in the game parks, roam lion. elephant, buffalo and rhino: in the mountain country of the Eastern Highlands are wooded valleys, peaceful lakes and some of the loveliest vistas in Africa. In the shops and markets you will find exquisitely worked handicrafts and Harare offers some of the friendliest night-life on the continent.
One of the best ways to see the country is to hire a car and make your own explorations - perhaps into the game parks or to the more remote towns and villages. Throughout the country there are well developed facilities for visitors and Zimbabwe's national parks are particularly well organized - there are many chalets, cottages and lodges, as well as many camp sites, within these parks. Even for golfers, Zimbabwe will prove to be a delight. Ideal weather combined with high quality and remarkably inexpensive courses make the country one of the best places in the world to play the game. Because of the country's inland position and height, which keep humidity comfortably low, Zimbabwe enjoys a superb climate, temperatures are agreeably warm in summer and winters are sunny and mild. The rainy season extends from Navember to March.
