Dar-es -Salam -a Kiswshili word mening" haven of peace"is an informal relaxed city with a profeusion of rich tropical flora,especially in December when the flam trees frangipanis and laburnum are in bloom.
Originally a small fishing village located on an attractive natural harbour ,it was developed as a port and trading center by the sultan of Zunzibar in the mid 19th century.

Shoppers will find that handicrafts are exceptionally good values in Tanzania Carvings particularly the much-prized makonda wood carvings are amongst the most sought after souvenirs , but African drums , chess sets , brass and copper items , batik , paintings , jewellery and carved bowls are also excellent buys.
Tanzanian history may be reviewed in the National Museum where impressive displays cover archaeology , the Shirazi civilization , the slave trade , both German and British colonial periods and handicrafts.
The Village Museum has a collection of vernacular architecture from various regions of the country.
